S/MIME Certificates

S/MIME (Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) is a standard for public key encryption and signing of emails and is supported in most email software.

For digital signatures (which protect the data integrity of the email and assert its origin) only the sender needs to have a digital certificate.  For encryption (which means that only the sender and recipient will be able to read the content of the email), both the sender and the recipient need to have a digital certificate.  The sender can choose not to sign/encrypt to a particular user from their email client.  Enterprise administrators can set group policy so that all outbound email messages are signed and/or encrypted as standard.

Typically, QuoVadis Standard class digital certificates, which validate the user's control over an email address, are used for S/MIME.  Standard S/MIME certificates are typically issued as soft-tokens (delivered as a P12 file) directly onto the user's device (or optionally on a SSCD token for enhanced security and portability).  QuoVadis also offers the Advanced class digital certificates when the dual use for S/MIME and document signing is desired.

  • Client authentication
  • Document signing
  • Email encryption
  • Email signing

Optionally, QuoVadis provides key archive of encryption keys should users (or enterprise administrators under certain conditions) require to decrypt previously encrypted communications.  For enterprise rollouts, certificates may also include the name of the organisation, the organisational unit, and/or function of the Certificate Holder.

QuoVadis Trust/Link allows flexible options for enterprise administrators to manage their S/MIME populations, with customizable workflows and delivery options, as well as web services Extenders to facilitate integration with inhouse directories and applications.

For enterprise implementations, centralised secure email gateways may be used to simplify the S/MIME process for users.  QuoVadis supports the following email gateway solutions:

  • Signature service from PrivaSphere   More
  • SEPPmail from SEPPmail AG   More
  • Totemo E-Mail Gateway   More
  • Z1 SecureMail Gateway from Zertificon   More
